Case Study

the problem

The intranet for Northland Controls, a global physical security integrator, was overdue for a facelift since its first release several years ago. This centralized tool, aka BearNet named after the logo, was missing a smooth and enjoyable user experience, usability, and on-brand internal messaging.

Before

the request

Adhering to Northland’s brand guidelines, expand and build upon the existing intranet by creating a centralized hub for all employees across all regions. Allow for users to easily access common forms and templates, department-specific information, and widely used applications.

the investigation

Over 40 interviews were conducted across the entire organization to hear voices from ALL departments, three global regions, every role, different lengths of service, and various levels of seniority, from installers to c-suite.

the results

Recorded interviews were analyzed for patterns and repeated responses. So what did users say? Here are just a few questions and common answers.
In your own words, can you please explain what BearNet is or what you think it is?
"...a space for company updates and newsletter previews."
"...that one place to find everything I need."
"...global links are there."
How frequently are you visiting BearNet?
"I use it everyday!"
"I rarely need it."
"...certain links are only found there so I have to use it."
What tasks are you coming here to complete or begin? Successful?
"...only really use the global links from the home page."
"I usually start here looking for company info but end up lost."
"I'm trying to find a current template, form, or slide deck."
What feature can you not live without?
"...updated department pages."
"...better organization and navigation."
"...global links and a forms center."

the prototype

A re-imagined homepage based off of interview feedback developed into organized access to global links with a consistent icon family, commonly used forms and templates, and important announcements.
The visual noise was quieted with a focused hero section with high-res photos of "bear" country. User pathways were simplified for faster access to target destinations and popular areas.

Before

After

Department page minimum requirements were developed so each team could customize the content but also maintain a consistent offering of information like team members, resources, and FAQs.

the pitch

New features, functionality, and overall designs were well-received and approved by the Executive Leadership Team with some additional feedback.
"Make images in the hero more cohesive."
solution
Hero images will now be monochromatic, tying back to the brand colors and how much they're used.
"Create a way for users to view hero content they may have missed."
solution
An Updates & Announcements page was created to capture and organize content as it is released.
"Design an About Us page showcasing the company's history and trajectory."
solution
The About Us page featured Northland's core values, the Northland Story, a simple 3D historical timeline, plus company goals and initiatives at a glance.

the test

Leadership feedback requests done. Time to test!

the RELEASE

Testing was successful, and the new version was made available at the beginning of the new year. Employees were welcomed back with a fresh new look and enhanced features, a perfect way to energize the team for the year ahead.

the future

With this new baseline set, Northland Controls is positioned to quickly and easily add new resources, tools, department pages, announcements, and more, all while connecting every Northland Controls adventurer from one platform.
